A suspect who allegedly tried to extort a ransom of Rs.5 million from an individual by calling him and threatening to kidnap his son, has been arrested by the Special Investigation Unit of the Mirihana police.
Police were able to arrest the suspect at Ambathale junction in Mirihana at about 3.00am yesterday (June 28). Subsequent interrogation has revealed that the suspect had also been involved in many other such extortion incidents.
The 39-year-old suspect, a resident of Morathota, Opanayaka, was produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court and remanded in custody till July 10. The Special Crime Investigation Unit of Mirihana police are investigating.
