The papare band that began playing music during the morning session of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at the P Sara Oval was suddenly asked to shut down by the umpire, an incident which is unheard of in cricket in Sri Lanka.

The papare band has always been part and parcel of the Sri Lankan cricket culture but in this instance it is the first time they have been asked to stop playing during a match.

An almost similar incident happened during England’s Test match against Sri Lanka at Asgiriya in 2007 when the English batsmen complained about the disturbance and the umpires instructed the band to play between overs or at stoppages.
