We regret to notify the passing away of our founder member John Thamber on March 6, 2015. He was in the NFOA Committee from the inception and served a two-year term as president during which time he rendered valuable and a yeoman service to the forum.

Mr. Thamber was a SLAS officer and served as Deputy Commissioner of Social Services Department until his retirement. He was actively involved in social service activities and served in various committees until his death. He has contributed a lot of valuable articles to media regarding the plight of helpless elders and suggested various programs and schemes to help the aging people.

The President had appointed him to the National Council of Elders in 2002 and served there till 2012. He was one of the members who were responsible for the Elders Act. Mr. Thamber was subsequently appointed in October 2009 as a member of Ministerial Committee to prepare National Action Plan for Elders.

The activities he contributed towards NFOA to bring it up to present position are numerous. The NFOA really misses his valuable contribution and suggestions towards elderly citizens of Sri Lanka.

Jonathan was a rare soul who was with us for a long time and helped us in numerous ways.May his soul rest in peace!
