Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said he was waiting on the recommendations of the committee appointed to consider regulating international schools. He was responding to a query raised by The Nation on the progress of the committee’s work. Minister Kariyawasam appointed this committee soon after he was sworn in as the Minister of Education. The committee is comprised Education Ministry officials and outsiders, including representatives of international schools.

Minister Kariyawasam insisted that there should be some form of regulatory mechanism for international schools, most of which currently operate as businesses under the Companies Act.

Proposals that came under discussion by the committee included introducing regulations that require all international schools to be registered with the Ministry of Education as well as the introduction of a licensing scheme for such schools.
