Half-centuries from Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Ali saw Pakistan put up staunch resistance to wipe out the first innings deficit of 177 on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the P Sara Oval.

By stumps brought forward by bad light that saw 26 overs going unutilized for the day Pakistan had moved to within six runs of making Sri Lanke bat again by scoring 171 for two wickets.

Azhar who shared a second wicket partnership of 120 with Shehzad was unbeaten on 64 (3 fours) and Younis Khan playing in his 100th Test was on 23 not out.

Sri Lanka captured the wicket of Shehzad in the first ball after the tea break when the opener attempted to pull Dhammika Prasad and top edged a catch to wicket-keeper Dinesh Chandimal.

Shehzad made 69 off 154 balls and would have been disappointed with his dismissal after laying the foundation for a Pakistani recovery.

Earlier Sri Lanka were all out for 315 in reply to Pakistan’s first innings of 138.

Pakistan leads the three-match series 1-0.
