One person was killed after police opened fire on a lorry which did not heed orders to stop at a road block in Aranthalawa early this morning.
Police Media Unit said the lorry had escaped despite being fired upon. However, police had later found it stopped on the side of the road at Borupola. Upon inspection, police has found an individual who had suffered gunshot wounds at the back of the lorry. He was admitted to the Mahaoya hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His identity had not been established thus far.
Police further said that knives and other tools used to capture and kill cattle have been found in the back of the lorry, leading them to suspect that the lorry was engaged in illegally transporting cattle. Further investigations are ongoing.
