According to the recently released World Bank report ‘World Development Indicators (WDI) 2015’, over 23 percent of Sri Lanka’s population is living below the poverty line of $1.25 per pay.  The poverty threshold or poverty line is the minimum level of income considered sufficient for living. The report identified Sri Lanka as a Lower middle income country with a Gross Domestic Product of $67.18 billion. However the poverty rate in India and Bangladesh is higher than Sri Lanka with 59.2 and 76.5 percent respectively.
