The working committee of the United National party (UNP) decided on Friday that the party will contest the upcoming general election alone. The decision was taken at a special working committee meeting held on Friday in order to take key decisions on the party’s election strategy, no-confidence motion, 20th Amendment and the party’s demand on the dissolution of Parliament. The party has also decided to give party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the power to make appointments to the nominations board.
Plantation Industries Minister Lakshaman Kiriella and Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam were quoted as saying a decision was also taken to hold a party convention in Colombo prior to the general election.
The ministers had said another resolution was passed requesting the withdrawal of the no-confidence motions against Premier Wickremesinghe; Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Public Order Minister John Amaratunga, placed on the parliament order book. They said they believe therefore the no-confidence motions would be withdrawn within the next few days.
