Cabinet has approved a proposal made to introduce a Code of Conduct for representatives of Local Government Institutions.

According to figures given by the government, there are 335 local government institutions functioning in the country comprising 23 Municipal Councils, 41 Urban Councils and 271 Pradeshiya Sabhas. A total of 4486 representatives are elected for these councils by the franchise of the people.

Addressing journalists at the weekly Cabinet press briefing today, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said a recent survey of local government institutions had revealed that 104 members of these institutions were currently facing action on charges of covering up various malpractices and corruption.

Accordingly, Cabinet approved a proposal made by Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Democratic Governance Karu Jayasuriya and Minister of Provincial Councils and Provincial Council Development Janaka Bandara Tennakoon to introduce a code of conduct for local government representatives and to implement the said code of conduct upon obtaining views and suggestions from the provincial councils.

When queried whether the code of conduct is not going to be introduced for provincial councilors and parliamentarians as well, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said a code of conduct will be introduced for them too. “However, we will first start with the local government institutions before moving to them”.
