Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith P. Perera told the media this morning that an election should be held as soon as possible and a mixed system should be introduced which will not discriminate minority political parties.

He said that UNP has already called for an immediate dissolution of the Parliament and conduct a general election as the Opposition is in an effort to “undermine” the government’s endeavors to re-build democracy in the country.

He also added that it was the United National Party played the most critical role to defeat the ‘dictatorship of the Rajapaksa administration’ bringing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena as the common candidate. “We must commend President Sirisena for taking up this formidable challenge in the midst of great risks on his life and his family members,” he added.
