Last couple of weeks, we heard about an eye disease spreading all over the country. Conjunctivitis, also known as sore eyes was reported from many patients around Colombo specially. Doctors advise public to take precautions to avoid being infected since it’s caused due to virus and bacteria.
Conjunctivitis is spreading due to the warm weather in the island. Usually, conjunctivitis spreads in the country in May, June and July every year. Red eyes, pain in eyes, discharge of mucus, tearing and headache are the main symptoms of this infection, and if you have any of these, it’s advised to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
Once you catch this infection, it lasts for three or four days. The patient should avoid going to crowded places and taking public transportation because you should be considerate of others catching the infection.
Doctors say that hygiene is the key to prevent catching this. Wash or sanitize hands regularly; do not make hand-eye contact frequently, keep washed clothes, sheets, towels clean and separate, avoid touching or contacting people who have conjunctivitis, and have a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals to keep eyes healthy. Also, if you are a person wearing spectacles or contact lenses keep them also clean.
Take care of your eyes!
