Former Maliyadeva College and Kurunegala Sports Club cricketer Chandima Alawatta has passed away recently at the age of 48 years after a brief illness.
He began his cricketing career at the age of 13 at Maliyadeva and rose to the top by captaining the College first XI team during the 1985/86 season. As a junior cricketer he hit a superb 192 with six sixes and 22 fours for Maliyadeva against St. Mary’s College Kegalle in an under-17 inter school cricket tournament match in 1983 after scoring 107 against same opposition in the same tournament the previous year.
He scored two more fifties against Dharmaraja College (64) and St. Anthony’s College Katugastota (55). During that season and went on to score 386 runs during the tournament.
He captained the Maliyadeva College team during the 1985/86 season with much success and posted over 700 runs. He scored 74 vs Isipathana, 47 and 70 vs Thurstan and 70 vs St. Anthony’s College Wattala during that season.
After leaving school he joined Kurunegala SC and represented them in the P. Saravanamuttu Trophy division one Cricket tournament in the early nineties. He made his first class debut for Kurunegala SC against Colts CC in the 1992/93 season in a Saravanamuttu Trophy final round match.
In all he played three first class matches and scored 61 runs with a top score of 26 against Moratuwa SC and also held two catches. He worked as Genaral Manager (Marketing) at the Ceylon Pencils (Atlas) after a brief stay at Kelani Cables as a sales representative in his early days. He was also a vice president of the Kurunegala SC.
His funeral took place at Kurunegala amongst a large gathering.
