According to statistics released by the police, as of Friday (June 12), 56 people had been reported killed in 44 accidents during the past week. Speaking to “The Nation” Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that most of these accidents were caused by “carelessness and recklessness on the part of the drivers”.
There were several deadly accidents on Friday itself. One of these was a collision between a tipper truck and a lorry that left the driver of the latter and two other pedestrians dead. The accident took place along the Colombo-Kandy road in Ranwala, Kegalle at around 4.30 on Friday morning.
