The Government has decided that for the moment, the Constitutional Council (CC) will function with the present seven members until a consensus is reached regarding the three civil persons who are due to be appointed to the CC.

Replying to a question at today’s Cabinet press briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Rajitha Senaratne stated that the matter was discussed at yesterday’s (10) Cabinet meeting, where it was decided that the CC should start work with the present seven members, who are all MPs, as the majority of the 10-member council had already been appointed.

Senaratne said accordingly, the CC can meet immediately if it wishes and is free to make appointments to the independent commissions so that the commissions can start functioning properly.

The minister said this was the best option available for now, stating ‘good governance is not easy’.
