Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna Commander Major General Nandana Udawatte claims that most of the lands in the Jaffna peninsula released by the security forces have not yet been occupied by their owners.

Major General Udawatte, addressing a team of media personnel in Jaffna today said that a total of 19159.38 acres of land which were utilized by security forces during the humanitarian operation have been released but only a ‘very few families’ have returned and settled.

He also said that the situation is the same in the lands released in 2012. The Jaffna Commander assured that though the number of Army camps in the area have been reduced, the security in the peninsula is ensured. “The reason why people have not come back to their lands is that most of them are overseas,” he added.

He further said that the government should decide what kind of remedy should be taken regarding such unoccupied and underutilized lands.
