World Oceans Day is celebrated annually on June 8. This day is celebrated to raise awareness on the conservation of oceans. It was initially proposed by Canada at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008.

Each year, The Ocean Project together with the World Ocean Network promotes world ocean day with the help of more than 1,600 ocean conservation organizations all over the world.  The theme for this year is “Healthy oceans, healthy planet” and special attention will be given to eradicate plastic pollution.

People all over the world celebrate this event with various events such as educational programs, art competitions, beach cleanups and film festivals. The United Nations will celebrate this event at the United Nations headquarters, where the winners of the Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo Competition will be recognized and at sunset, the Empire State building is set to be lit in white, blue and purple, the official ocean day colours.

In honor of World Oceans Day, here are some popular books that have been written centered on the great and mighty ocean.
