The Badminton Asia Confederation (BAF) has branded Sri Lanka as a disgrace after its coach Shankar Annamalai was threatened, humiliated and forced to quit last month.
This coach who is a Malaysian national was threatened by a senior badminton player who is known for his shady antics and pampered by the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
“Mr. Annamalai had been not only ill-treated but also humiliated in front of even the junior players who are to be future Sri Lankan representatives. In this regard, we have been reliably informed that a few senior players had been the main culprits in creating this situation, which is a disgrace for a country with a significant inspiring culture and heritage.”
This quote was taken from a letter sent to Suraj Dandeniya, President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association signed by Thana Arikrishnan the Development Manager of BAF.
The letter further stated that Annamalai’s nomination was done with a lot of expectations.
“We wish to reiterate that the nomination was carried out with all good intentions to ensure that the standard of badminton in Sri Lanka will develop further. It is our contention that the recent achievements by Sri Lanka shuttlers indicated our selection in no uncertain terms,” stated the letter.
According to Suraj Dandeniya the president of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) this senior player is known to have humiliated this coach every time he is on duty training the younger players who are earmarked to perform well in the future.
“This senior player says that he has a coach and a physio who are members of his family and making many financial claims from the Olympic Committee and the government. What is the purpose of spending so much money on an individual who wants to just represent the country at Olympics. We should spend the money on a young prospect who will win a medal at Olympics,” observed Dandeniya.
