A statement from the Opposition Leader’s office on Friday (June 5) denied Minister Sajith Premadasa’s claims about a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP). The minister had reportedly made this remark at a speech given at Theraputta Primary School in Ambalantota.
Clarifying the SLFP’s position on the matter the statement explained that Minister Premadasa’s remarks were blatantly false, adding moreover that they were made to compensate for the fact that at an election the UNP would face defeat. The statement condemned the minister’s remarks, accusing him of misleading the public on this count, and stating that the SLFP and UPFA will definitely try to break apart the UNP and the rest of its right wing alliance at the upcoming election.
In conclusion, the statement affirmed that the National Government concept was being repeated by the UNP to compensate for the possibility of electoral defeat, observing that the party is “clutching at loose straws”.
