A suspect wanted in connection with the abduction and murder of a retired Grama Niladhari from Mundalama has been apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.
Police Media Unit said the suspect had fled overseas after the crime but was identified and arrested by Immigration Officers after he arrived back in the country yesterday (June 2). He was later handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
The victim, retired Grama Niladhari Pattani Razeek, had been abducted by unidentified individuals in Polonnaruwa on February 11, 2010. The abductors had demanded a ransom of Rs.20 million in order to release him but the victim had been murdered after failure to pay the ransom.
The arrested suspect is a 33-year-old resident of Kawatthamune, Valachchanai. The CCD is conducting further investigations.
