Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa says it was the relevant branch of the bank had not entered her national identity card number to the system and she has done nothing wrong when handling the accounts of “Siriliya Saviya.”
She has told the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) that the Siriliya Saviya was run by her as a non-governmental organization and maintained with the funds received from the philanthropists local and overseas.
She has also mentioned that they had a plan to build a Children’s Hospital and a hostel for the women who look after the parentless kids. She has stressed the officials that not a cent from the public funds had been received for their NGO.
According to her statement to the FCID, she has provided a copy of her passport when they opened the bank account at the Suduwella Branch of People’s Bank. She has said that all other officials such as K.H.A.N.Jeewani Kumari and S.K.K.Dissanayake also provided their national identity cards and she had no idea why the officials did not use their ID numbers in the account.
FCID officials have taken almost two hours for the questioning of the former first lady. For the first time, FCID had sent its officers to a separate location to record a statement. Accordingly, she had made her statement at the residence of the Speaker of the Parliament, sources said.
Journalists were waiting at the FCID office premises for her arrival at the office, but only later they knew that the statement was being recorded at somewhere else. However, photos had been released online her leaving the home this morning accompanied by her husband and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the younger son who is an Navy official.
