Special Parliamentary session will be held during this week, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody said. Constitutional Council (CC) which was introduced by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution needs to be set up soon and three civil society representatives have to be approved by the Parliament to fully set the body soon.
The next Parliament session is due on June 09; however, the House will meet as a special session to approve the names for the Constitutional Council. The date which is to meet the Parliament will be decided by the Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa this evening.
The proposed constitutional Council will be included 10 persons including seven parliamentarians. The Speaker of the House will be the Chairman of the Council and The Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition are also the members by law. The Nation also learnt that Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe will be the nominee of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and MP John Senevirathne will be the nominee of the Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva.
Sources also said that Minister Champika Ranawaka will be the nominee of the President Maithripala Sirisena. TNA Leader R Sampantha will be in the Council as the representative of minor political parties or for the political parties representing the Parlaiment.
Government sources were reluctant to reveal the identified names for the three seats from the civil society. However, The Nation learnt that the names of Rathika Cumaraswamy, SC Mayadunne and AT Ariyarathne are being considered at present.
