Kurunegala district Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando who was produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate this morning on the alleged financial fraud at Lanka Sathosa has been further remanded until June 8. Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Ravindra Premaratne gave the order extending the questioning period for two more weeks.

Former Minister of Co-operatives and Internal Trade, Johnston Fernando was taken into custody by the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) on May 05 and he was produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya. He was initially remanded for one day. When he was produced in Courts on May 6, he was remanded till May 25.

He had been arrested by the FCID over alleged misappropriations at Sathosa that took place during his tenure. He had been charged over an allegation of an order to release goods worth more than Rs.5.2 million be released from three CWE warehouses in the Kurunegala District.

Fernando had however failed to settle the bills for the goods at any of three CWE stores in Yanthampalawa, Wehera and Mallawapitiya.However, later one associate of MP had settled the bills by three cheques.
