Young Sri Lankan Photojournalist, Tharaka Basnayaka won a Gold Medal at the 2015 International Salon of Reporter Photography (LifePressPhoto) Ukraine, organized by the Ukrainian Center for Photographic Art and ‘Ostrog Academy’ of Ukraine National University. Tharaka also won a Diploma under the Sports Section.
The opening and the awarding ceremony of the exhibition will be held in National University ‘Ostrog Academy’ on June 11, 2015. The exhibition will go around in a few selected European countries afterwards. This year, 4734 photographs were submitted for selection from 44 countries for 71 awards.
The purpose of the exhibition is popularization of documentary photography and strengthening its importance in today’s world and to emphasis the importance of preservation of its authenticity and truthfulness of, educational role.
Tharaka(26) started his journalism career at Rivira Media Corporation and spent a year at The Nation and Rivira. He currently contributes to International Photography Agencies such as Getty Images, Corbis Images. Tharaka’s work has been recognized and featured in renowned-international publications such as TIME, The Guardian and
the New York Post.
Tharaka is also an International Exchange Alumni. In 2012, he studied ‘New Media Journalism’ at the University of Oklahoma. Then, he went on to tour Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and Washington DC as an exchange student.
In 2011, Tharaka won the award for the ‘Best Student (Print)’ at the Sri Lanka College of Journalism. He is also certified for English Language at the Cambridge English Department, University of Cambridge, the UK in 2005. Tharaka has covered short editorial photography assignments internationally, in the USA, Oklahoma (2012) and China, Beijing, Lanzhou (2014).
Currently serves as a staff photojournalist at Ceylon Newspapers (Pvt.) Ltd based in Colombo Sri Lanka.
Tharaka covers a wide range of editorial assignments specializing in Sports, News and Features. Among the many numerous assignments covered by him are, ICC World T20 World Cup 2012, CHOGM 2013 and the Colombo Fashion Week.
Graduated as the best student 2011, Sri Lanka College of Journalism, nowadays, Tharaka is reading for his Masters Degree at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has won the first place in ‘UNICEF CRC Instagram Baton 2015’.
