Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe says that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has become an ‘opportunist’ and is trying to use the incident where a Jaffna girl was raped and murdered for his personal and political needs. “Incidents take place everywhere in the world. But, politicians never use humane issues in politics,” Minister Rajapkshe told the media at the Government Information Department on Friday.
The Justice Minister said that the incident is being investigated and any effort to transform it to an ethnical or communal issue should be prevented.
He said that even the newspapers, published in Jaffna, appreciated the way police and other officials behaved during the incident. “It is a sensitive case. We have to look at and handle it very carefully. Former President Rajapaksa has viewed it in a different angle and is using it on stages for his political ambitions. That’s not for a lawyer and that is not for a former President of a country,” Minister Rajapakshe added.
Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene also addressed the media and said that the present situation in Jaffna is peaceful and no special security arrangements had been made. He also said that the damage on public property is not yet estimated, but it will be attended to soon. Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith Perera also addressed the media.
