Although it is not very popular, some countries celebrate a day called ‘One Day without Shoes’ on May 24.  It’s very easy to take shoes for granted, we will not even think of going to school, or go out of the house without shoes, sandals, slippers or anything to cover our feet with. Although we are lucky enough to not go out with bare feet, many people and children in the world don’t own or have access to shoes.

‘One Day without Shoes’ was initiated to show the awareness of and support for those who don’t have access to such a simple, but important item.

This was started by Blake Mycoskie, seven years ago. Blake owns a shoe company called TOMS. Every time you buy a pair of shoes, they give a pair to someone in need. They’re encouraging everyone to take off their shoes on May 24 to raise awareness for children’s health and education and help battle diseases like podoconiosis.

Even for us, this is something good to try. Try not wearing shoes for one day. Walk down the street without shoes, experience what children with no shoes feel. Next time, you want to buy expensive fancy shoes, think how lucky you are because you can wear shoes every day? Millions of children live without proper footwear, thus exposing themselves to injury, infection and weakening disease every day.

So, will you buy a regular pair of shoes and spare the saved money to buy another poor kid a pair next time?

Until next week
With love
