Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club created history once again by establishing two world records and a Sri Lanka domestic record in the just-concluded Sri Lanka Premier League Season.

The team recorded the highest ever First-Class total in a day in world cricket history by scoring 530 runs for the loss of six wickets in its match against the Air Force on February 13 this year at Katunayake. In the day’s quota of 90 overs the batsmen hammered 15 sixers and 62 fours at the rate of almost six runs per over.

Skipper Chanaka Welagedara broke the world record for the best First-Class performance with astounding figures of 4-2-2-4 against the strong Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) batting line-up in a T/20 game on April 5, 2015.

Sri Lanka Test batsman Kithuruwan Vithanage broke the record for the highest-ever individual score in the Premier League, by scoring 351 in 287 balls on February 13 and 14 against Air Force and his knock contained 14 sixes and 33 fours.

These were the highlights of an otherwise ordinary season for the Club, which was bereft of players of the calibre of T M Dilshan, Rangana Herath, Jeevan Mendis, Suranga Lakmal and Shaminda Eranga, who were on National duty for most of the period, including the World Cup. Consequently, a relatively inexperienced team performed to the best of its ability.

Chandra Schaffter the president of Tamil Union hosted a dinner at the Club on April 28 for players, support staff and General Committee-members of the club. At this function, Welagedera and Vithanage were presented with trophies and bonus cheques commemorating their performances.

It will be pertinent to record here that Tamil Union also won the SLC Under-23 Tournament three years in a row in 2011, 2012 and 2013 – the first club to achieve this feat.

Tamil Union continues to foster young talent from the outstations by identifying good prospects, providing them with accommodation and meals at the Club till they get on their feet financially thereby giving them the best training facilities like gym, pool and the rest of requirements constantly guiding them in their social skills, counseling them through bad patches, providing the best coaching possible, giving them the opportunity to play alongside legends in the Club team – benefits very few other clubs can provide.
The Club also has a good number of players from schools in Colombo and the suburbs joining its ranks.

As one of the pioneer cricket clubs in the country Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club have an obligation to perform at the highest levels.

While thanking Sri Lanka Cricket for its support, Tamil Union also welcomes the corporate sector and Individuals to sponsor it to the next level.
