Mild mannered former ace runner Sugath Thilakaratne was elected as President of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) at their AGM held at the NIIF Torrington on Thursday.
One of Asia’s fastest athletes in the 400 metres event, Thilakaratne received an overwhelming majority of 59 votes over Upali Kumarasiri who also contested the top post.
A soft spoken personality Thilakaratne speaks very little but has promised to work hard and deliver the good during his tenure of two years.
Sunimal Rupasinghe was elected as the secretary for the first time.
