A former respected Sri Lanka Cricket administrator and sportsman has been earmarked for a top diplomatic post overseas.

Somasundaram Skandakumar affectionately known to friends as “Skanda” is tipped to become Sri Lanka’s next High Commissioner in Australia.

An advertisement to this effect inserted by the ‘Committee on High Posts of the Parliament of Sri Lanka to examine the suitability of the person nominated/appointed to the State Services and State Corporations’ appeared in the print media on May 12 inviting organizations or individuals desirous of making representations with regard to the appointment.

A gentleman to his finger tips Skandakumar was an outstanding cricketer with Royal College, Colombo, the Colombo University and Tamil Union before he moved onto cricket administration where he was associated for nearly two decades since 1982. Apart from holding several posts in various committees he was secretary twice and during his period performed yeoman service to the game.

He was also president of Tamil Union Cricket & Athletic Club and group chairman of one of Sri Lanka’s oldest business house George Steuarts which he served for 34 years. [ST]
