Veteran sports promoter and CEO of the Kotte Football League, Telesphor Dias, had a harrowing experience at the Customs on his return from a trip to Dubai last week.

Dias had disembarked from a SriLankan Airlines flight from the UAE along with his wife and to his utter shock had discovered his baggage had been ripped open when it came along on the conveyor belt.

The items in it scattered all over the floor when he attempted to extricate the baggage as the lock on the lid had been broken open.

Dias said many items in the baggage had been pilfered and subsequently made a complaint to a Customs officer who summoned the Officer in Charge of the baggage counter.

But the Officer in Charge claimed the miscreants were at the Dubai airport.

Dias had returned to Sri Lanka with his wife after attending the First Holy Communion ceremony of his grandson born to his son Sujeewa Dias, a former St. Benedict’s College fast bowler.

Sujeewa Dias works as a banker in Dubai and did all the airline booking for his father Telesphor at the SriLankan Airlines office in Dubai.

Dias told The Nation he will be taking up the matter with the Minister concerned.
