Darshana Rajapakse of St. Sylvester’s College Kandy brought glory to Kandy by winning a silver medal at the Asian Youth Athletic Championship held in Doha Qatar from 8th to 11th May.

Rajapakse who did his training with limited facilities clocked 52.87 second in the boys’ 400 metres hurdles event for the silver medal. He was able to attain this position due to his keenness and dedication in athletics.

Three other athletes also won medals. They are D.M. Yamani Dulanjali from Ambagamuwa Central who won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles for girls. Chamal Kumarasiri won the silver medal in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 15.39m. Dhammika Ranathunga of Kularathne Central Godakawela who also won a silver medal in the high jump clearing a height of 2.12 metres.

Initially only three athletes were picked out of seven who had qualified due to lack of funds. But the intervention by Nimal Lewke, Chairman of the National Sports Council had requested for more funds from the Sports Minister Navin Dissanayake who readily agreed to release more funds.
