Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga revealed that massive financial irregularities had been taken place in the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) during the last few years and he has decided to appoint a commission to look into all kinds of irregularities taken place at the SLPA.

He said that the most corrupt public institute could be the SLPA. “I have already stopped several malpractices which have been planned by some personnel in the Authority. The theft and corruption have become an essential part of some officers. Several years ago, I thought that the Cricket Board could be the most corrupt, but now I know it’s none other than the Ports Authority”, Minister Ranathunga said in an exclusive interview with The Nation.

He further added that most Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera warned him saying that all sea water won’t be enough to clear the Ports Authority. “I soon realized that Ven. Thera was 100 percent correct. I can’t even think how officials play with public resources and money without having any guilty feeling or shame.” Minister added.

Minister Ranatunga also said that the proposed commission to look into the irregularities of the Authority will be headed by President’s Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetti. “The other members will be decided at a meeting with me on Monday. All the culprits who play with public resources will be revealed and punished. That’s the promise given President Maithripala Sirisena to the public just before the election and the government will keep its word cleaning these public institutes.
